Medical Specialties
Hospice medicine aims to provide whole person comfort care; attending to patient’s mind, body, and spirit as they navigate a life limiting illness from diagnosis to a natural death with respect and dignity, mindful of Kenyan cultural sensitivities to end of life issues.
Hospice care attends to both the patient and their family/care givers utilizing an interdisciplinary team of physician, nurse, chaplain, pharmacy, medical supplies across the settings of home, outpatient and inpatient. The hospice team at Tenwek consists of Steve Manchester MD, nurses Evelyn Ngeno and Rael Bii, and Chaplain, Pr. Benard Mutai. Hospice services were provided to #2064 patients last year (2023). Hospice consultations are available to inpatients at Tenwek Hospital, specialty clinics and community self-referrals.
The process of planning and establishing a free-standing inpatient hospice unit is currently under way at Tenwek. Having done a short-term hospice focused mission at Tenwek I can personally attest to the compassion, skills and dedication of the hospice team and am proud to endorse their efforts.
