Residency Programs

Tenwek Hospital Residency Programs

Tenwek Hospital sponsors two residency programs:

  • General Surgery Residency Program – a five-year residency program conducted under the auspices of the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa; and
  • Family Medicine Residency Program – a four-year program conducted under the auspices of Kabarak University.

The residency programs address one of the greatest challenges in African health care: an insufficient number of doctors to treat patients and train new physicians. Graduates of the programs are asked to serve in rural areas where medical resources are limited. Some have provided critical service in Tenwek’s outpatient department, in operating rooms as anesthetists, and in the ophthalmology department. Others now serve at various levels in government, private, and mission hospitals in Kenya and beyond.

The General Surgery Residency Program held its first graduation ceremony in January 2013.
