Chaplaincy School

L. Nelson Bell Chaplaincy School

Tenwek Hospital’s L. Nelson Bell Chaplaincy School trains Kenyans as hospital chaplains through two programs: a six-week program and a two-year course. The training equips graduates to serve as chaplains both at Tenwek and at hospitals across Africa. To date, approximately 220 students have graduated from the school.

Students enrolled in the Chaplaincy School are trained to work in concert with medical staff to ensure that every patient has the opportunity to hear the Gospel. There is a particular focus on the use of Bible scriptures to encourage patients who are emotionally impacted by their illness or injury. Students also are trained to comfort and help the families and friends of patients.

Chaplains trained here also serve in schools and prisons throughout Africa.
